Meet Prince Jake

Last month I posted the news that Disney had high hopes for its live-action adaptation of the popular video game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The studio had a script and was feverishly looking for a hot male lead to play the Prince; Jake Gyllenhaal and Disney were in talks. Today, The Hollywood Insider, confirms that Jake has been cast in the lead role. Filming is set to begin in July with director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). If the movie is a success it will no doubt turn into a film franchise, which I think will be a good career move, plus we'll get to see a lot more of Jake!

Jake Gyllenhaal to be The Prince of Persia?

With the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, which was based on the theme park ride, Disney has high hopes for it's live-action adaptation of the popular video game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The studio has a script and is feverishly looking for a hot male lead to play the Prince. LatinoReview.com is reporting that Disney Studios has put an offer out to Jake Gyllenhaal. It could be the franchise opportunity of a lifetime for him. It will be a very physically demanding role but I know that our Jake would look fantastic and be great in it!

Disney is targeting a June 2009 release date for the film.

Jake Gyllenhaal Sighting # 2

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon were out and about in Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon. I am a bit jealous of Reese at the moment- does it show much? And look at Jake's mid-section... he's getting a little thick around the middle, isn't he? Does Jake look a little too domesticated in the pic to you? Actually, our Jake looks very happy with Reese, so I'm happy for them, really, I am.

The Under 30: Hollywood's New Movie Stars

They're young, they're hot... they're the next generation of Hollywood. Some of them are already acting veterans and not all of them are American but they are all making an impact and connecting with audiences. Entertainment Weekly has profiled a group of these young men - "30-under-30" - among them, Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad), Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine), Jesse Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale), Jim Sturgess (Across The Universe), James McAvoy (Atonement, Last King of Scotland). I've selected a few of my favourites below. Who do you like among the new men of Hollywood? - QTC

CHANNING TATUM
AGE 27
BROKE OUT IN... The 2006 hip-hop dance hit Step Up.
WHY HIM A former model, Tatum finally turned heads with his acting chops as a hotheaded delinquent in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006).
WHAT'S NEXT After going to war in Kimberly Pierce's Stop Loss next month, Tatum will lead the troops in next year's G.I. Joe movie and team up with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in the upcoming Public Enemies.

JOSEPH GORDON LEVITT
AGE 27
BROKE OUT IN... NBC's 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996-2001), as an adult alien stuck in the body of a human teen.
WHY HIM Using the tried-and-true ''go indie'' method for career revitalization, Gordon-Levitt shed his goofy image with parts in daring, moody dramas like Mysterious Skin (2004) and Brick (2005).
WHAT'S NEXT Like fellow 30-Under-30 pick Channing Tatum, Gordon-Levitt has parts in both next month's Stop Loss (March 28) and G.I. Joe (summer 2009).

GAEL GARCIA BERNAL
AGE 29
BROKE OUT IN... Y Tu Mama Tambien, as a Mexican teenager who embarks on a journey of sexual discovery with a friend (Diego Luna) and an older woman (Maribel Verdu).
WHY HIM Bernal isn't just another latin heartthrob. His choice in movies leans toward brainy fare like Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education (2004) and Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep (2006).
WHAT'S NEXT This summer, he stars opposite Julianne Moore in the thriller Blindness, from City of God director Fernando Meirelles.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL
AGE 27
BROKE OUT IN... Donnie Darko (2001), as a brooding teen with visions of an oracular rabbit.
WHY HIM Brokeback Mountain (2005) made him an easy target for jokes — but also earned him an Oscar nod. And he's consistently taken solid roles (Zodiac, Jarhead) that make up for the ones that aren't quite so firm (The Day After Tomorrow).
WHAT'S NEXT He plays the underachieving brother to Toby Maguire's soldier in the upcoming drama Brothers, co-starring Natalie Portman.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger and The Controversial Video Tape

Did Jake Gyllenhaal personally exert pressure through ID Public Relations, the firm which represents him and that also represented close friend, Heath Ledger, to force producers of both Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, to drop plans to air the remaining footage of the video that depicts Heath's alleged drug use?

The media frenzy over Heath's alleged drug problems were fuelled by reports in OK! and US Weekly Magazine earlier in the week. Subsequently, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider aired a portion of the video footage on their Wednesday broadcasts. IDPR said that Entertainment Tonight paid a significant sum of money for the video. According to various other sources it may have been as much as $225,000.00. The video was shot in Hollywood in January 2006 (erroneously reported as having been shot last year) in a room at the Chateau Marmont Hotel, the night of that year's SAG awards.

I've seen a portion of the video and Heath can be heard saying "I’m going to get serious s**t from my girlfriend. We had a baby three months ago…"I shouldn’t be here at all." I did not see him use drugs. Heath appears on the video looking like a bloke who is out, partying and having a good time with some mates - in other words, he knows he's being naughty. By all accounts, Michelle Williams, Heath's girlfriend at the time and the mother of his daughter, did not attend the party. She was staying in the same hotel but was in a different room at the time the video was being taken.

There are many unanswered questions about this video, such as who made it? So far no one has been credited as the source for supplying the it to the tabloid TV shows. Also, since the footage was shot in 2006, why did it take this long to surface in the mainstream press? Portions of the video have been available on YouTube for at least a year. Was Heath aware that he was being filmed?

IDPR released a statement yesterday that condemned the shows for airing part of the footage on Wednesday (January 30), saying it was "...a salicious and exploitive story about Heath, which would win them big ratings on the first day of sweeps." Mara Buxbaum, a partner at IDPR, had no comment regarding a rumour that the firm would boycott Entertainment Tonight, but with its A-list portfolio of stars, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Stiller and this year's Oscar nominee Ellen Page ("Juno"), among others, such an action would significantly hamper Entertainment Tonight's access to the stars. Entertainment Tonight and The Insider bowed to the pressure and released statements that they will not air the remaining Heath Ledger footage today. - QTC

Jake Mourns Heath Ledger

Everyone has been wondering, where is Jake Gyllenhaal and how is he doing, since the death of Heath Ledger. Last Saturday, he was photographed with girlfriend, actress Reese Witherspoon and by all accounts he was looking very distressed and distracted. Heath and Jake became good friends on the set of "Brokeback Mountain" and Jake even became godfather to Heath's two-year old daughter Matilda. Now a friend of Jake's tells People:"Jake is taking this harder than most people." Nowhere is that more apparent than on the New Mexico set of Gyllenhaal's latest movie, Brothers. "This has had a strong personal affect on [Jake]," says a set source. The insider adds that Gyllenhaal left the set immediately after learning of Ledger's Jan. 22 death – but he flew back on a commercial flight to shoot an additional scene on Thursday. "He was there, but he wasn't with us. It was obviously a major trauma," says the movie source. "These guys were very close. [Jake] was sitting in the director's chair staring off into space." People goes on to say that a source from "Brothers" noted the set had been a happy one. Jake had even brought a picture of Heath to place on the wall while filming an intense prison scene. The set source recounts to People, "Like those prisoners put [loved ones] on the wall, but Jake's was Heath Ledger," one set source recalls. "That was hilarious. It was a nice moment." The source adds, "When you think back on it now, it's touching." I think that Jake's gesture symbolized how close the two men were. It's never easy losing someone you care about and no amount of wealth or celebrity can make the pain any less real. - QTC

The (Not So) Real Gay Hollywood

Christian Taylor writes:
This week trash mag Famous have done their best to cash in on the scandalousness of being gay by producing their “Real Hollywood Gay List”. Splashed all over the front cover is every old news story and gay cliché under the sun, wheeled out, repackaged and sensationalised for the straight masses to devour.

It begs the question – why does stuff like this sell magazines? And what kind of message does it send?

Famous’ list purports to uncover the so called truth about gays in Hollywood, like they’re all cowering under rocks. What is actually presented is a rehashed, overcooked, defamatory yawnfest, which can essentially be broken up into three categories – ‘Der, everybody already knew that’, ‘we’re grasping at straws here’ and ‘this has got to be a total fabrication in order to boost a celebrity’s career.’
